How to apologise and make things worse at the same time

Refuse to get yourself all dirty by using a human word like ‘sorry’. This is a bad word.

Census and sensibility

One of our tips for writing well is this: write what you’d say if you were speaking to one person, face to face.

The tip applies even if you’re writing to millions of people. Which is exactly what someone did this week with their letter of introduction to the census. You might have read it.

Mission Statement Impossible

It’s easy to be cynical about mission statements.

Our mission is to give the best possible customer service. Of course it is. That’s why I’ve been listening to Dire Straits for ten minutes while you tell me how much you value my call.
